PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Jayant Dasgupta has taken over as the Ambassador & Permanent Representative of India to the WTO on August 1, 2010.  His most recent assignment was as Secretary, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India.

He has taken part in the Doha Round negotiations between 2006 and 2009 as Joint Secretary in the Department of Commerce, Government of India. 

Mr. Jayant Dasgupta had earlier handled India's bilateral trade relations with the Americas,infrastructure development for exports as well as well as policy issues relating to the Special Economic Zones.  He has also served as Director (Exports) in the Ministry of Textiles in the nineties, dealing inter alia, with the implementation of the ATC.   

Mr. Jayant Dasgupta belongs to the Bihar cadre of the Indian Administrative Service and has held a wide range of assignments in the State Government of Bihar, including as Secretary to the Department of Excise, Rural Development and Cabinet Secretariat & Coordination.   

Ambassador Dasgupta has Master Degrees in Physics, Management, Economics and Social Policy & Planning and a Bachelor's degree in Law.
