I'm speaking in my national capacity

Delegation of India has studied the document CDIP/18/4 - Compilation of member states inputs on SDGs relevant to WIPO's work

The Sustainable Developmental Goals are universal, integral and indivisible in character. Hence, shortlisting only specific SDGs as relevant to WIPO's work would not be in line with the holistic treatment towards addressing the realization of the objectives of the SDGs. Our delegation is of the view that all 17 Sustainable Development Goals should be mainstreamed in the work of WIPO.

The SDGs recognize the role of technologies in the achievement of the SDG related targets.WIPO has a mandate to work on transfer of proprietary technologies and the role of technology is explicitly mentioned with reference to SDGs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 14.

 

Mr. Chairman

We have analysed the proposal submitted by Brazil in which it has specifically proposed for the inclusion of a standing agenda item in the CDIP on the "Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals". The proposal has lot of merit. India would like to fully support the proposal made by Brazil for including an item on the implementation of the SDGs in the CDIP
as a permanent agenda item.

CDIP needs to be careful in following any fragmented methodology and stay away from a piecemeal, a la carte, pick and choose approach.

India is of the view that the discussion in the CDIP should focus on identifying what are the Intellectual Property and related proprietary technology issues pertaining to each SDG and its related targets, and work towards address them SDG by SDG without skipping or bypassing any SDG.

We thus strongly support an integral, interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to the work of WIPO in the implementation of SDGs.
